Kinderdijk - a UNESCO World Heritage site - is composed of 19 mills, or pumping stations. Kinderdijk is the only place in the world where there are so many windmills close together. Except for two, which have been converted to museums, the windmills are operating to this day. They are inhabited (as are these) and still participate in Holland's water management system in the low-lying polders.
This position of the sails is called "St. Georges Cross" (sails vertical/horizontal). It's the position for a short pause - the mill is halted for a short time (perhaps overnight), but can rapidly be restarted. In this position, the miller can immediately climb into the bottom sail to set the sails. (Information from the Kinderdijk info booklet).
The Dutch Masters have always impressed me with the inclusion of a massive sky in their landscape paintings - the land in The Netherlands is very flat. I tried to imitate that in my photography of the windmills.
