Description
The notorious 59 mile McCarthy Road follows the old rail bed from Chitina to a mile from the historic town of McCarthy. In the early 1900s, McCarthy was quite a Kennecott copper miner and railroader little town - providing the young men with eateries, saloons, pool halls, shops - and a red light district for the 27 years that the mines of Kennecott were in operation. They closed in 1938, but McCarthy has learned to reintroduce itself as a very interesting tourist town. This image was captured during a rainstorm - which fortunately scared off the mass of tourists. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, southeast Alaska in summer.
