The architecture of the canal houses in Amsterdam is both unique and practical. Built from the 15th century on, the houses are narrow (property tax was based on the footage of the house along the canal), long, and contained as many windows as possible (to cut down on the weight on the unstable topsoil underneath). Photographing along the canals at night was a photographer's dream. Notice the red curtain near the center of the images. Yes, it is what you think, even thought this scene was captured outside of the Red Light District.
