I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph wild polar bears near the Inupiat Eskimo village of Kaktovik on Barter Island above the Arctic Circle on the north slope of Alaska. For four days in the fall of 2015, I watched and photographed these amazingly beautiful animals as they played, ate bowhead whale scraps from the village's harvest, and slept - all the while waiting for the sea ice to allow them to continue their journey north to hunt seals, breed and give birth on the ice.
